Trofim Modlyi, 19, who’s from Khabarovsk in eastern Russia, was visiting his sister in Alberta when Russia invaded Ukraine last February. He decided to file a refugee claim in Canada because he didn’t ‘want to kill innocent people in Ukraine.’
