Helene Thiesen was part of a project aimed at stripping children of their cultural identities to mould them into “little Danes.” The failed social experiment is a dark bit of Danish history that echoes in Canada as this country continues the grim task of tallying hundreds of potential gravesites near residential schools where Indigenous children were sent.
